Diwali Puja Vidhi and Mantras on the festival 

Diwali is the festival of worship of idol goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha. Puja is performed on the Diwali night on Amavashya of Kartika Month during October or November. The appropriate time (Muhurat) to perform Diwali puja is Amavasya Thithi and Pradosh time.

On the day of Diwali, people should get up early in the morning and pay tribute to their ancestors and worship family gods. Being Amavasya day, people also perform Shradh for their ancestors. Traditionally, most Puja are performed after keeping a day long fast. Hence, the devotees of Goddess Lakshmi observe a day long fast on the day of Lakshmi Puja. The fast is broken after Lakshmi Puja in the evening.

For Diwali Puja people should buy the new Pratima (प्रतिमा) of Maha Lakshmi. This Puja is given for new Pratima or Murti (मूति॔) of Shri Lakshmi.

New Statues for Diwali Puja – for Diwali Puja, the first thing people do is to buy new statues of Lord Ganesh, Mother Lakshmi and Mother Saraswati.

The puja altar or pooja place in the home is cleaned and decorated. The idols of Ganesh, Lakshmi and Saraswati are placed. They are decorated with sandal paste, vermilion and flowers. Things you need for the puja include as many earthen lamps as possible (Diya), turmeric powder, sandal paste, vermilion, coconut, betel leaves and betel nuts, flowers, pure water, some nice dishes or sweets for offering and others as per your possibility.

At the start of the puja, chant Ganapati Mantra and pray to him for removing the obstacles on the way of the puja.

Ganpati Mantra:

Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah

Chant the mantras of Ganesha, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Also offer flowers chanting the Ashtothra Namavali (list of 108 names) of these three deities one by one.

It is highly auspicious to chant Sri Suktam (the vedic mantra dedicated to Lakshmi) on this day which shall bring good fortune and prosperity to the home.
